CITIZENPOLIS

location: EXCHANGE DISTRICT, WINNIPEG
size: 18' x 104'
with h5 architecture

Dense groupings of copper poles mimic the experience of moving through a crowd of people, and over time trace visitors through a developed patina. Combined with stone and wood, the material palette references the unified presence of the Building and Metal Trade Workers marching down Elgin. While elevated polished concrete podiums offer moments to contemplate and view engravings with details of the historic event, individuals can learn and reflect on stories of the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike. A single tree represents the continued growth and progress society continues to strive for as an inclusive multicutural collective. Paying tribute to the past that shaped the area while building on the refined cultural arts district that has evolved, Citizenpolis transforms a latent strip of land into an interpretive educational installation for future generations.
